The rumble of heavy-duty trucks keeps our economy rolling. But to keep those rigs on the road legally, you need to file Form 2290, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) return. This guide will equip you with everything you need to know for a smooth Form 2290 filing experience in August 2024.

Understanding the Deadline:

Accordingly, September 3rd, 2024 is the due date for filing Form 2290 for vehicles used during July 2024 because August ends on Saturday which means that it will be submitted on next weekday after weekend or holiday.

Who Needs to File Form 2290?

If any of your vehicles weighs over than fifty-five thousand pounds (or twenty five thousand pounds if used in manufactured housing) and has been operated upon public highways during this filing period from July First, Twenty Four through June Thirtieth, Twenty Four then consequently there is an obligation of filling out a specific form; this applies as per section three above.

What You'll Need to File:

  • Part II: Vehicle Information: Provide VINs for each vehicles being filled for as well as taxable grosses weights and FUMs.

  • Part IV: Payment Voucher: To attach with payment for taxes use this section.

Filing Options:

There are two ways to submit Form 2290:

  • Electronically: As a matter of fact, the IRS even prefers that tax payers complete their HVUT returns online through one of their authorized IRS e-file providers. For the most part, this method is convenient and fast.
  • By Mail: The form can be completed and payment voucher sent to the address provided in the instructions by post.
