This Form 2290 is applicable for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) for truck owners who drive a vehicle weighing not less than 55,000 pounds. The deadline for filling the forms varies depending on the very first month he uses the vehicle.

General Rule for Due Dates:

  • Annual Filing: This is the most effective method for a majority of truckers who face a deadline of 31 august more so for the vehicles used in July which is the beginning of the tax year.
  • First Time Use: Where a vehicle is put into use in any month other than July, Form 2290 due date is by the end of the month following the month in which the vehicle was first used.

For example:

If you have a truck that you will use in October then your form 2290 has to be submitted before the ending of November that is the form 2290 deadline is November 30.

A truck first put in use in the month of March would have its deadline on workload submission of the 30th of April

Key Points to Remember:

  • Pro-Rated Taxes: They are the taxes imposed on truck owners concerning how many months the truck was in use during the fiscal year. Such trucks purchased later in the year will not attract any payment for the months of July 1st till June 30th of the next year.
  • Penalty for Late Submission: There may be penalties for a person who does not file Form 2290 on the due date required to be adhered to. There is a penalty of 4.5% of the tax due each month until after 5 months if the tax has not been paid.

Avoiding Late Fees

The best way to avoid such penalties is to file Form 2290 as soon as the truck is first used on public highways and act fast to observe the deadline. It is better to make the payment electronically through IRS approved vendors for faster processing and reduced chances for delays.

There are no complexity issues in the Form 2290 filing process once you comprehend the schedules in respect to your truck's first use. All you need to do is pay attention to the deadlines, and there will be no risk of paying late penalties since IRS requirements will be complied with.
